Holiday Accessories

With the holidays fast approaching I begin to think about what I'll be wearing to the various parties I usually go to.  Of course being the lover of jewelry that I am, accessories are a must.

I've always loved Garnets.  Being my birthstone might have something to do with it.  Garnets combined with citrine have a lovely warm feel that's just right for  winter.

However the cool clear colors of ice and snow are beautiful too.  Do you have any favorite pieces of jewelry you like to wear at the holidays?

Halloween Cupcakes

For the last couple of years I've been making these Witch Hat Cupcakes.  They are really fun and easy to make. The hat is made from a chocolate wafer and the last 2 1/2 inches of an ice cream cone.  I frost them with black icing and roll the cone in black sugar. They're always a big hit when I take them to parties. I hope you are all enjoying your fall holidays. Have a Happy Halloween!

Fall Jewelry

I love seasonal jewelry.  Especially autumn and Halloween.  Designing these pieces brings back lots of childhood memories of the fall season.

This time of year makes me think of little bats that dart about,

magical ladies with charms and spells,

traditional colors of the season,

the warm, rich color of Smokey Quartz,

And owls that hoot in the night!  I hope that you're all having a fun October!

She will be missed

Last Saturday September 30  my cat Mekay passed away.  She had been with me for for 20 yrs. I used to live in Japan and I found her as a stray on the streets of Tokyo and brought her back to Los Angeles with me.  I will miss her.  In the photo below she was 4 months old, Sept. 1992.

To Love Again

Oh what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate,
The gate where once another stood
to beg for shelter, warmth and food?

For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny,
While she with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.

She scratched the furniture and shed
and claimed the middle of my bed,
She ruled in arrogance and in pride
And broke my heart the day she died.

So if you really think, oh cat
I'd willingly relive all that,
because you come forlorn and thin
Well don't just stand - there come on in!

Dreaming of the Fall

I know it's still summer, but I am longing for autumn.  Cozy sweaters, scarves and coats. I recently created a treasury list on Etsy and I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you.  This lovely Camel Sweater caught my eye, and you can find it HERE.

This bezel set Carnelian necklace has a beautiful fall color, like the autumn leaves that will be covering the ground in a month or so.  You can find it HERE.

A nice cashmere and wool coat would look gorgeous with a colorful scarf and a pretty lapel brooch.
You can find it HERE.

No outfit would be complete without an elegant Black onyx ring.   I think black onyx can be very mysterious and perfect for fall.  You can find it HERE.  It must be the heat wave we've been having here. When it gets up 100 F I start to melt and dream of the autumn season.  Am I the only one?

Peridot - Birthstone for August

Peridot is such a gorgeous gemstone.  That lovely green color seems to bring jewelry designs to life.

Those of you born in August are lucky to have such a beautiful birthstone.  Peridot was called Chrysolite in ancient times and frequently mentioned in the Bible. It was thought to foster prosperity and alleviate depression and jealousy.

I love using it  in my jewelry designs.  One of the reasons I named my shop Olivine Jewels is that Peridot comes from the olivine mineral group.  Is anyone else a fan of Peridot?

Although lockets aren't as popular as they once were, I find them charming and sentimental.  This flower engraved gold locket is one I found at an antiques market many years ago.

Queen Elizabeth the first wore a locket ring with portraits of her mother and herself inside.

Mary Queen of Scotts had the Penicuik Locket that she is thought to have given to a servant before her execution.

Today you can find many lovely lockets for sale, especially on Etsy.  This compass locket is from the Etsy shop Birdz n Beez.

You often see them in classical portraits.

How elegant hanging from the wrist.

Their beautiful gemstones sparkle in the light.

A lovely bracelet always adds a polished look to anything you wear.

Rings can have so many different meanings. Symbols of love to some, symbols of power to others. Either way they can be amazingly beautiful and elegant. Sometimes the simplest of rings will convey so much.

Take these three rings for instance.  The Garnet ring I bought in Tokyo many years ago and it reminds me of my travels there.  The gold buckle ring is an antique and symbolizes marriage.  The gold coral rose was my grandmother's and brings pleasant memories of her.

These three are wedding and engagement rings from the 1950's.

I never used to like Turquoise however  I absolutely love it now. These three all belonged to my Grandmother. She'd be pleased to know that I wear them all the time.

Vintage Chinese Jewelry

It's amazing how detailed old jewelry can be. The craftsmanship of this silver, jade and enamel set is really beautiful. My father was in the Navy in WWII and bought this set in China in 1948.  They have been in my mother's possession for many years now.
Unfortunately one of the earrings was lost a long time ago.  So I told my mom we should have the remaining earring made into a ring and the brooch into a pendant. The pin on the back of the brooch is broken.  I'm just glad these pieces have survived at all.

Lovely Agates

I've always liked Agates.  Their warm natural colors and beautiful striping are very appealing to me.  Agates were cherished gems in antiquity and frequently used in ancient jewelry designs.
Of course I like to use them in my jewelry designs. This one I currently have in my shop. I'll be adding some new ones soon.

Spring is Here!

It's so uplifting to see everything in bloom and the  butterflies everywhere.  This little butterfly is a Painted Lady. They always show up about this time of year.  I took this photo at Descanso Gardens which is not to far from my home.
Descanso has a beautiful Lilac forest. These photos were taken last year.  I'm looking forward to seeing this years  blooms!

Are You Fat?

Over a hundred years has past and nothing has changed. While looking through old newspapers and doing genealogy research I found this advertisement.  This is from a paper in 1905. You would think after all this time people wouldn't fall for this stuff anymore.

But we do.  All the weight loss adds I see on TV are a testament to that. I could stand to lose a little weight. I know the only way to do it is to eat right and exercise.

Maybe I should try these! Exercises for restoring beauty.  Sounds pretty good to me.

Then again there's plenty of gadgets to try.  Like I said some things never change.
What do think?

Edwardian and 1920's Jewelry

Ever since I started watching Downton Abbey I've been enamored with these long strand necklaces. They're so elegant and versatile.
And you can double them for a completely different look. Downton Abbey has been a great inspiration and resource for me!

The Beauty of Gemstones and Crystals

Gemstones and crystals have always been fascinating to me.  I remember going on vacation as a child and stopping at those roadside rock shops out in the desert.  The Amethyst crystal in the photo is one I purchased as a teenager.  The Quartz crystal and green Calcite are more recent acquisitions.
Since Amethyst is one of my favorite stones I use it a lot in my jewelry designs.  This is a picture of my Sophie Amethyst and freshwater pearl necklace.
The amethyst stones are fairly dark but much lighter with the light shining through them.
Do you have a favorite stone?  I'd love to hear about it.
