Turquoise December's Birthstone

Sorry I'm so late posting this month. Between Christmas and three December birthdays I just couldn't get it done.  So having said that let's talk about Turquoise. The name means Turkish Stone, because it came to Europe by way of Turkey. The ancient Egyptians often used turquoise in their jewelry designs, and it is thought to be a stone of wisdom and spiritual journeys.

I hope you all had very Happy Holidays and I wish good things for you in the new year.

Topaz - November's Stone

Topaz is such a lovely gemstone. The name Topaz is thought to come from the Greek word for Zabargad which is an island in the Red Sea. Besides the warm amber color shown in this ring it also comes in blue, white and even pink. This beautiful ring comes from an Esty shop called  Bestingems.com and you can find it: Here.

Citrine is a good substitute for the more expensive Topaz. These garnet and citrine earrings are in my shop Olivine Jewels.

Opal - October's Birthstone

The beautiful Opal is October's birthstone. Over 500 years ago the Aztecs mined opals in Central America and they were discovered in Australia in the 1880's.  There are many types of opals such as white opal, black opal, fire opal and boulder opal.

Ancient Romans considered the opal to be a symbol of power and Europeans in the 14th century thought it was an unlucky stone.  I think it's an amazingly beautiful stone!

Finally Fall is Here!

I took the dogs for a walk this morning and there was a wonderful crisp Fall wind blowing! The sound of leaves tumbling along the side walk was lovely.

So many squirrels gathering up the last of summer's offerings.

I think I'll pull out all my Autumn decorations this weekend.

I see pumpkins for sale everywhere I go.

And I can smell that pumpkin pie already!

Peridot - The Birthstone for August

The lovely green of Peridot is one of my favorites. Peridot is often called Chrysolite in many ancient texts.  I bought these stones at an estate sale and I hope to create something beautiful with them in the future.

Peridot looks lovely with many different stones but I think it looks best with pearls!

Pearl- June's Birthstone

The birthstone for June is pearl! Pearls are so beautiful and they are the only gemstone created by a living creature and not the earth itself.  In gemstone lore pearls are thought to help bring success and prosperity. They have a long history and are mentioned in the Bible many times.

Of course Coco Chanel was famous for her pearls!

This freshwater pearl necklace is one of my designs in my shop. Do you own any pearl jewelry?

Diamond - April's Stone

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile things have been pretty busy around here.  Anyway, here we are in April and diamonds are this month's stone.  Those beautiful sparklers are always a favorite and look so stunning. The Diamond gets its name from the Greek word adamas, which means "unconquerable". Probably due to it's hardness. Diamonds can come in colors such as
red, green, yellow, and blue.

Since Diamonds are so expensive,  there are always other beautiful alternatives like this Quartz crystal pendant which can be found in my shop.

February's Stone - Amethyst

Amethyst is the traditional stone for the month of February.  The astrological stones are amethyst for Aquarius and moonstone or aquamarine for Pisces.

It really is a beautiful stone in jewelry and I love using it in my designs. This is one I have in the shop now.   The color can range from pale violet to a deep dark purple. Since purple is my favorite color I am a bit partial to Amethyst.

What do you think about Amethyst?

January's Stone

January's gemstone is Garnet.  Since those born in January can be Capricorn or Aquarius their astral stones are said to be Amethyst.  However Garnet seems to be the commercially accepted gemstone for January.

This is a raw Garnet.  Garnets actually come in a variety of colors including green, yellow, orange, black, and of course red. Garnet is said to stimulate creativity, passion, and physical energy. The word Garnet may come from pomum granatum, which means pomegranate in Latin.

They certainly can look like pomegranate seeds!
